I was lucky enough to be able to attend the LPGA Press Conference yesterday afternoon where the six players gunning for the No.1 ranking – Jiyai Shin, Suzann Pettersen, Cristie Kerr, Yani Tseng, Na Yeon Choi and Ai Miyazato, were talking about the forthcoming challenge at Grand Cypress golf course.
The event starts today at 7.00am and promises to have some amazing high points and no doubt, a few lows for some players. last year, for example, Jiyai Shin came within 2 inches and one point of winning the player of the year award when her chip shot on the final hole of the final tournament did everything but go in.
This year, five players (Shin, Kerr, Tseng, Choi and Miyazato) could be Player of the Year while six players (add Suzann Pettersen to the list,) could end the year at No. 1 in the Rolex World Rankings. The first five have combined to win 14 of the 25 events while Kerr (LPGA Championship) and Tseng (Kraft Nabisco & Ricoh Women’s British Open) have won three of the years four majors.
Currently Choi holds the slender advantage for the LPGA official money title and also for the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average. There’s a lot on the line for the ladies this week…I’ll keep you updated as the tournament progresses.
