John Lennon would have been 70 today and appropriately enough, one artist has remembered the ex-Beatle enough to have sculptured a life-size image of him. At 8pm last night international sculptor and painter Lawrence Holofcener opened the sculpture to the public at the Mount Dora “Art Stroll.”
The sculpture, entitled “Imagine,” is on loan to the City as Holofcener really wants to put it permanently in New York’s Central Park or in Liverpool. Holofcener said: “I was inspired to create this portrait of John Lennon because of his genius and what he cared about: peace. Generations, now and in the future, need to be reminded of his contributions. Also, I believe in making art available to the public. Children and adults are able to interact with this sculpture, even sit with John Lennon and Imagine a world without conflict.”
It’s a fitting way to pay tribute to the legendary singer / songwriter who was shot and killed at age 40 by Mark David Chapman on Dec. 8, 1980.
