2013 Mylan WTT Smash Hits with Sir Elton John & Billie Jean King
Sir Elton John and Billie Jean King co-hosted the 21st annual Mylan WTT Smash Hits presented by GEICO at ESPN WIde of Sports at Walt Disney World earlier tonight. The event is an all star charity tennis event with local hosts are Robert and Tricia Earl helping John and King to raise money that will benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) and Hope and Help Center of Central Florida.
The series of matches have been played since 1993 and over $11.5 million has been raised for charity in that time. The matches are played to a high standard and are highly competitive. Both sides have won ten times each with Team Billie Jean defeating Team Elton 19-17 last year in Pittsburgh.
The sides this year were made up of Andy Roddick, Venus Williams, Vicky Duval and Robert Kendrick on Elton John’s team and Marion Bartoli, John Isner, Taylor Townsend and Jean-Julien Rojer starring for Billie Jean.
The teams play a total of five sets plus overtime if necessary and the scoring is cumulative. To start the evening there is a celebrity set of doubles and that’s where Elton John gets the chance to show what he can do with a tennis racket. Billie Jean, meanwhile, plays the role of team captain and enjoys watching her side take part.
It was a fun evening and the winning team who took the bragging rights this year was….Team Elton John who won 24 to 18. Elton’s team now goes 11-10 up in the overall series. Congratulations Team Elton!
