A Tribute to Zig Ziglar

Filed under: Florida News |

It is with great sadness that we learned today of the death of Zig Ziglar after a short battle with pneumonia.

Zig was born on 6th November 1926 in Gary, Indiana, to parents John Silas Ziglar and Viola Ziglar. He was the tenth of twelve children.

In 1931, when Zig was five years old, his father took a management position at a Mississippi farm, and his family moved to Yazoo City, Mississippi, where he spent most of his early childhood. In 1932, his father died of a stroke and his younger sister died two days later. Zig served in the Navy during World War II and he was in the Navy V-12 Navy College Training Program attending the University of South Carolina.

Zig and "RedHead" Jean

In 1944 he met his wife, Jean, who he lovingly called the “redhead” in Jackson, Mississippi when he was seventeen and she was sixteen. They married in late 1946 and on Monday 26th November 2012 they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary.

Ziglar later worked as a salesman in a succession of companies and in 1968 he became a vice president and training director for the Automotive Performance company, moving to Dallas, Texas.

He then became known throughout the world for corporate training and motivational speeches that aimed to improve people’s personal lives and careers. Zig wrote more than 29 sales and motivational books, including “See You at the Top” and “Over the Top,” and made appearances with U.S. presidents and world leaders.

He was a kind and caring man who only wanted the best for people. I was lucky enough to meet him when he came to Orlando in November 2009 and his daughter Julie, took the picture you see below. I’ll never forget the words he spoke as she took that picture;

“Is that a digital camera?” Zig asked.

“Yes” said I… “Why?”

“Because I don’t want to hang around negatives” replied Zig with a mischievous grin on his face!

Goodbye to a legend… and as his family says “Though his time on earth has ended, he is speaking with Jesus now in his heavenly home. The angels in heaven are rejoicing and his family is celebrating a life well lived.”  RIP Zig.
