Baylor Bears defeated ACC-Coastal champion North Carolina’s Tar Heels 49 – 38 in a highly entertaining Russell Bowl in front of approximately 40,000 football fans packed into the Orlando Citrus Bowl. The teams combined for 12 touchdowns, 1,243 yards of total offense and 87 points.
Baylor set an all-time bowl record with 645 rushing yards despite missing two quarterbacks, an award-winning receiver, and a 1,000-yard running back. The Bears’ No. 1-ranked scoring offense stayed creative in making 756 total yards, another record for this bowl. The most productive offense in college football helped Johnny Jefferson rush for three touchdowns and a record 299 yards as he waltzed past the Tar Heel’s defence.
“It just says we’re tough. Baylor’s whole identity is `physicality travels.’ That’s all we preach. That’s all we teach,” said Jefferson, whose rushing performance was a Russell Athletic Bowl record. “So being physical today, we won the game.”
The Baylor Bears finish 2015 with a 10-3 record while North Carolina will drop to 11-3.
