Cyle Larin scored two goals as Orlando City beat Head Coach Jason Kreis’s former team New York City FC 2-1 on Sunday to move atop the Eastern Conference standings.
Kreis returned to Yankee Stadium for the first time since being dismissed in 2015 as NYCFC’s inaugural coach. Larin notched goals in the 31st and 51st minutes to keep alive his record of scoring against New York and he now has nine goals in seven games against the team based in the Bronx.
“Obviously really pleased with my team’s performance and their efforts. They continue to astound me with what they’re willing to put in and what they’re willing to give for this Club and for themselves,” Kreis said. “Really, really pleased with their efforts against a very good team and in a very difficult place to play. Couldn’t be happier at the moment.”
The first goal came when Scott Sutter got behind the New York defence to cross from the right hand side for Larin to tap home. Larin grabbed a brace early in the second half when he out-powered the home defence to head home a Donny Toia cross and give the visitors the 2-0 lead.
David Villa got one back in the 74th minute when he evaded his marker at a free kick and hooked the ball home past the advancing Lions goalkeeper Joe Bendik. Bendik then came up with a superb last minute to save to secure the three points for Orlando.
