Angel Cabrera and Angel Cabrera Jr. (pictured above) shot a final round 60 (-12) on Sunday, following up yesterday’s round of 59 (-13), to seal victory at the 2017 PNC Father/Son Challenge with a 119 (-25) total. The score equaled the previous best for the tournament.

The duo, who become the third team to win on their debut, started the day at 13 under par and never looked back, despite the lead changing hands on several occasions – eventually winning the prestigious event by three shots from Team Duval and Team Langer to earn the $200,000 first-place check.

Trading blows from the very beginning, Team Cabrera birdied the first hole before exchanging eagles with defending champions, Team Duval, at Nos. 3 and 5, with Team Duval going on to take the initiative after nine holes, turning in 28 (-8) shots.

It wouldn’t last.

Team Cabrera reclaimed the lead early on the back nine with birdies at Nos. 10 and 11 before adding gains at 13,14 and 16 to stamp their authority on the tournament before a closing birdie at 18 secured the title in a record-equaling score of 119. Defending Champions, Team Duval, who finished a stroke lower than they did last year, had to settle for tied second with German duo, Team Langer, at 22 under par.

Cabrera, a worldwide winner of 51 titles, who is best known for his victories at the 2007 U.S. Open and the 2009 Masters, will now add another piece of golf history to his trophy cabinet. The PNC Father/Son Championship winners receive the Willie Park belts, named for the first father and son duo to win the Open Championship, Willie Park Sr. and Jr.

Commenting on the win, Angel Cabrera said, This is certainly my best week of the year. To play alongside all the legends like Nicklaus, Trevino, Faldo, Langer and so many others, as well as playing alongside my son, has been the greatest week of the year.’

Reiterating his Father’s words, Angel Cabrera Jr., who has played on both the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica and the Mackenzie Tour, said, ‘There is no comparison to any tournament I’ve played in the past, its been so special here.’

Team Duval may have finished one place short of last years’ heroics but they were gracious in defeat.

David Duval said, ‘In general, we’re happy. I think we played well, I think we played better than I thought we might. Once the gun went off, we performed and executed, as we wanted. We did what we had to do today and that was get out really fast.

Langer, a three-time Father/Son Challenge champion, who alternates his partner between daughter, Christina and 17-year-old, Jason, may have a tough decision to make in 2018 after Jason’s birdie putt on 18 secured second place for Team Langer.

Commenting on the week, Jason said, ‘It’s a special environment, it is nothing like I experience in junior golf so to step inside the ropes and see what my dad does is fun to do.’

Asked about whom he might partner next year, Bernhard responded, ‘We will see what the future holds but he did himself proud and played great.’

Eighteen-time Major winner, Jack Nicklaus, (pictured above) who played with his grandson for the first time, Gary ‘GT’ Nicklaus, rolled back the years by holing out for birdie on 18 to finish with a round of 64 (-8) to finish in 15th at 132 (-12).

He continued, ‘We didn’t shoot a really low score this week but by gosh, we had a lot of fun.’

The 2017 Father/Son Challenge field included more than 500 victories across the PGA TOUR, European Tour and PGA TOUR Champions, 57 major championships and 9 World Golf Hall of Fame members.

Over the 19 years of the tournament, 24 World Golf Hall of Fame Members have played in the championship, averaging 66 percent of the professional field each year. The winning team of the two-day, 36-hole scramble receives the Willie Park Trophy, in memory of the father and son British Open champions Willie Park Sr. and Willie Park Jr. This year’s purse is $1,085,000.
