Wet ‘n Wild Orlando to close December 2016
The pool party is coming to an end at Wet ‘n Wild as park operators, Universal Orlando, today announced that it is closing at the end of 2016.
The popular water park was founded in 1977 and is generally considered to be one of America’s first major water parks.
A post from Wet ‘n’ Wild’s Facebook page read: “After almost 40 years, Wet ‘n’ Wild Orlando will be permanently closing on December 31, 2016. Check out the Universal Orlando Resort blog for a thank you to our fans for all of the countless memories.”
In its place Universal Orlando Resort, which owns the water park, will build Volcano Bay. Volcano Bay is set to open sometime in 2017 as the “resort’s third incredibly immersive park,” according to a Universal Orlando news release. Volcano Bay is being constructed on 53 acres near the theme park’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort. What is unknown at this stage is whether any slides or attractions will migrate from Wet ‘n Wild to Volcano Bay; both parks primarily feature Proslide products, some of which could be disassembled and relocated, assuming they could be integrated into the new park’s tropical tiki theme.
It will be a sad day in Orlando when Wet ‘n’ Wild closes.
